REVIEW
THE PLAYSCHOOL CONCERT
Reviewd by Carly Nasso
Monday 8th January 1990, 9.30-10.00am on ABC TV.
A large audience had gathered to see if Benita and John could cut it
live.
When they eventually came on stage, the largely underage crowd greeted
them with cheers and crying.
Benita's stage presence was excellent. Her seductive hand actions through
'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star' were brilliant. John on the other hand was
appalling. He forgot most of the words, and actions to 'Head, Shoulders,
Knees and Toes's and his drawing of a car, spider and star were not up
to his usual studio standard. But his half open shirt and new fashion
bowl hair cut kept the little girls in the audience screaming for his
body.
Things got a little bit wild during the rendition of the classic 'Humpty
Dumpty.' One of the energetic slammers lost a baby tooth, but Benita and
John kept the show going.
Most of the crowd were well behaved except for a few drunken yobbos screaming
'get yer tits out' to Benita. The dance floor was usually full of Jiving,
twisting kiddies all grooving to such Play School classics as 'Take you
driving in my car', 'Insie Winsie Spider', 'I'm a little tea pot' and
'Polly put the kettle on' featuring Jemima.
A great version of 'Bananas in Pyjamas' with guest appearances from Big
Ted and a yellow Banana looking slinky in striped P.J.'s. The show closed
with 'If you're happy & you know it, clap your hands'.
Benita, John, animals, dolls and odd creatures, showed that they can
keep a crowd going even without the help of Story time, Flowercocks and
Windows. Even Warren the piano player was great.
Though they didn't come out for an encore, a good time was had by all.
Weep if you missed it!
